Discover the history of the Greek Revolution of 1821
centred on the town of Megalopoli
We began our journey by descending towards the plain which in antiquity was called Megalopolis...
Today, the Municipality of Megalopoli comprises the municipal units of Megalopoli, Falaisia and Gortyna. The project focuses on the events that took place within the present-day boundaries of the Municipality of Megalopoli; there are, however, several references to places, events and people active outside these boundaries, because the administration at the time of the Revolution was organised differently. At that time, Arcadia consisted of the vilayets (provinces) of Karytaina, Leontari, Tripolitsa, Agios Petros and Prastos.
Digital Library
This section contains short narratives about the places, settlements, monuments and protagonists – men and women, Christians and Muslims – connected with the course of the Struggle that led to the liberation of the Peloponnese and the founding of the Greek state.
Timeline
The Revolution was officially declared in the province of Megalopoli on 24 March 1821, after secret consultations between Papaflessas and the military chieftains of the province at Dyrrachi and Akovos. In this section you can view a timeline focusing on the most important events of the Revolution in the area, alongside a more general timeline of the Struggle that provides the wider context.

‘Where are you going,
to fight warships with grain boats?’
but like rain, the desire for our freedom fell upon us all, and all of us – our clergy, the notables, the captains, the educated and the merchants, young and old –
all of us agreed on this aim and we made the Revolution.
The project “Digital historical exhibits, multimedia applications, encyclopaedia / blog on the history of the revolutionary years, to be hosted in the modern multi-purpose venue / museum for history, culture, art and technology” is implemented by a Consortium of Economic Operators consisting of the Foundation of the Hellenic World (FHW) and Talent S.A.
The Consortium has extensive experience in Virtual, Augmented and Extended Reality experiences, as well as expertise that combines cultural and historical information with new technologies, while also developing innovative educational tools in the field of cultural heritage management. The project team combines know-how in the digitisation and photorealistic rendering of monuments, in the creation of interactive exhibits for cultural and educational venues, and in the design and management of complex IT projects and multimedia applications, offering the public unique opportunities to get to know history through modern digital media. It relies on organisational structures with specialised software development and project management departments, ensuring the complete implementation of every stage of the project life cycle. In this way, visitors are offered a complete experience of culture and technology.
