Battle of Akovos

Akovos of Megalopolis

Description

The Battle at Kotronia of Lagopatis took place near the village of Akovos in May 1826, when a small group of armed men (10 individuals) lay in wait for Ibrahim Pasha's detachments, which were moving through the Sampaziko area toward Messenia. The pass at the "Lezona" location was guarded by a fighter from the village of Arfara, Messenia, nicknamed Lagopatis. He spotted the detachment of forty Turco-Egyptians and alerted the nine Akovites to set the ambush. The Greeks took them by surprise, attacked with momentum, pursued them, and ultimately eliminated them in the area of Tsiouka. This small but victorious ambush is a characteristic example of the guerrilla warfare (kleftopolemos) that Kolokotronis applied against Ibrahim’s army in the Peloponnese and is considered a significant battle for the region of Falaisia. The local toponyms have been named in honor of this battle. Kolokotronis mentions the battle it in his documents to the government of the time, recognizing its importance.
